Documenting a Day
The functions between word processor, excel spreadsheet, and power point presentation are somewhat the same in terms of font structures, coloring and inserting images. Here are some advantages and disadvantages for each application:
- Word processor
- Very simple to use and straight forward but lacks control. One cannot simply place an image anywhere on the paper freely unlike power point.
- Excel spreadsheet
- Great application for organizing, data collecting, and calculating using different formulas but it starts becoming a hassle when printing. The select only option when printing is a nice touch but the paper still may not have all the info that is collected.
- Power point presentation
- Easiest of the other two and has more control but not much information can stored into one slide. As word processor and excel can have plenty of information on one page, power point will have to deviate into ten or more slides to show the same amount of information. But as that is a disadvantage, it can also be an advantage as the audience will not be overwhelmed with information and one can also add images and animations to each slide to keep the audience entertained.
One application that was not mentioned above is database. As database was not a part of the application taskers, the application was not reviewed in depth. According to Vahid & Lysecky, a database is a collection of organized information that can be retrieved efficiently. In a way, excel spreadsheet is considered a database since data can be calculated and with utilizing functions, one can retrieve said information efficiently (2017). Because of how efficient it is, excel spreadsheet was the most helpful to document information based on my day. For an example, I am given a task to present our current medical asset percentages as part of a mission ready standpoint. Word processor can only simply describe what the percentages are and why. Power point presentation can present well but still can only simply describe what the percentages are and why. Excel spreadsheet database however can present what the percentages are, why they are like that, and break the information down by which specific items are making the percentages that low. It is one thing to tell someone why drinking soda is bad everyday but it is another thing to show someone the ingredients inside the soda, the percentages of daily intakes, and even calculate “what if” scenarios utilizing functions to show how it would look if two or more sodas were consumed.
